The Dunlow Council voted unanimously at its regular meeting Tuesday evening to approve development of a new 15-acre community park on the former mill site east of downtown. The 5-0 decision followed six months of public input sessions and environmental reviews. Project costs are estimated at $2.5 million, financed through municipal bonds and state recreation grants.

Park Features and Amenities

Plans call for paved walking and biking trails, a playground with safety surfacing, picnic shelters, a fishing pond, community garden plots, and outdoor fitness stations. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring and last 18 months. Landscape architects will retain existing tree cover and add native plantings to support local pollinators. The design also includes accessible pathways meeting ADA standards and lighting for evening use. Council members noted that bids for the general contractor will be opened in January, with preference given to firms employing local workers.

Expected Benefits for Residents

Mayor Jane Thompson said the park addresses long-standing requests for additional green space as Dunlow’s population grows. Residents at the meeting cited improved opportunities for exercise, family gatherings, and youth programs. Temporary construction jobs are expected to number around 40, while ongoing maintenance will require two new full-time positions. Business owners along Main Street anticipate increased foot traffic once the park opens. Further public forums will be held in the coming months to refine playground equipment choices and trail routing. The council also approved formation of a volunteer park advisory board to guide operations after completion.
